Where am I? That was the question. In the heart of this geological tumult, on the relief of the antediluvian chaos which presided over the formation of the Pyrenees. At the heart of this knot overflowing with telluric force which lightly tosses the appellations of the southern slopes of the Corbière mountains. In the heart of this complex zone, of this natural sanctuary which, from the Catalan Calce to the Languedocien Durban now makes up one of the most coveted vineyards in the world. It is from this apparent geological disorder, from this sublime pedological shambles, that stems a large part of the originality, richness and rarity of the Castelmaure terroir. Wedded by the hillsides, limestone and schist intermingle, combining their virtues to resolve, through the intermediary of the vine, this sort of “squaring of the oenological circle” which proclaims that strength necessarily opposes finesse.
But, the energy that rises from the soil must not make us forget the sky or, nor especially, this precious Mediterranean climate with short mild winters, and hot dry summers. This climate invigorated by the winds, in the image of the Cers and its northerly gusts which purify the grapes much better than all the chemical treatments in the world, and concentrate the juices. This climate toned by the altitude which guarantees at the peak of the summer heat, the cool nights that are essential, in these lands in the South of the South, for bringing out the finest aromas from the grape.
